Week 5: FreshGrade – Getting the Most out of FG

Like we have discussed, FreshGrade is an amazing tool that allows teachers to upload and share their students’ work and progress with parents daily. By documenting their students’ everyday activities it can help make processes such as  assessment simpler and more accurate. FreshGrade comes fully equipped with all of these features and it is important as an educator choosing to use FreshGrade, that you know how to get the best bang for your buck. FreshGrade offers many different professional development courses that educate teachers and faculty on how to get the most out of using FreshGrade.

The first course that teachers could sign up in for free is Getting Started with FreshGrade which outlines the fundamentals on how to use FreshGrade on your own time. It includes a step by step process as well as practical examples on how to use FreshGrade in your classroom.

Another available course is I’m Proud of me! Mental Health and Self-Esteem through Digital Portfolios which discusses how through the use of FreshGrade, and giving constant and positive feedback to students can benefit children who are having mental health or self-esteem issues.

FreshGrade offers courses on Developing a Growth Mindset through Digital Portfolios  which discusses strategies on how to use FreshGrade to shift students from a fixed to a growth mindset.  It is stated that through regular communication with students and by promoting self-reflection in digital portfolios it can encourage a growth mindset.

There is an assessment course called Assessment Strategies That Promote Learning Instead of Labelling that enables teachers to see how using student observations, conversations, and products can give great insight into their students’ learning.

Lastly, FreshGrade offers a course on Increasing Student Metacognition Through Self Reflections  which discusses how reflection drives forward student learning and how it can lead them to take ownership of their learning.

Week 4: FreshGrade – Pros and Cons for the Teacher 

We as educators are always looking for new and efficient ways to interact and communicate with our students and parents. The use of technology in the classroom has made this so much easier and FreshGrade is an amazing tool that many districts in British Columbia are starting to use.

FreshGrade allows teachers to plan lessons easily and efficiently, it also keeps all of your lesson plans organized in one easy to view area. The program lets teachers attach assignments and media that their students can easily access whether in the classroom or at home. Each student can also make their own digital profile, that allows for teachers to view all student work in one place. It also lets the teachers leave their students comments and feedback on all assignments. Students can also write and discuss their learning in their own learning journals, letting teachers see where students may be struggling or what they liked about an assignment. Another feature that teachers love about FreshGrade is that it allows for them to enter all grades into the gradebook feature, making assessment simple and organized. By having all students assessment and comments available on the site, teachers can communicate with parents more efficiently about their students’ progress. 

Although FreshGrade has many positive features, after some research we have found a few cons that users should take into consideration. The program does not support drawing tools, allow voice narration, or text to speech tools. The program can also be very time consuming for teachers as it adds another task for them to be completing and updating everyday. For parents who may not feel comfortable with having their students information on the internet, teachers may find it difficult to be sending feedback both on FreshGrade as well as in other forms for those students who are not on the site. All in all, FreshGrade has more pros than cons and we believe that this is a program that we as future teachers would be interested in using with our own future students.

Week 3: FreshGrade – Pros and Cons for Parents

FreshGrade is an amazing tool that educators can use to make lessons, assess and keep track of each student’s progress and learning in the class. For parents there are many benefits that come from the use of FreshGrade such as receiving daily uploads of information from the teacher such as photos, videos, audio, and notes. For parents it allows them to feel as though they are truly involved in their child’s learning process by being able to visually see what the class is doing each day and the content being taught. They also attain the ability to comment on their child’s work, which allows parents to give positive feedback on something their child is doing really well in, or equally if  they were struggling with something parents will know what the class was working on and be able to give their child the support that they need in order to succeed.

Parents do not have to wait for parent teacher meetings throughout the school year to learn how their child is doing in the class, with FreshGrade parents are sent frequent updates from the classroom teacher discussing their child’s learning and achievements and can understand how their child is doing in each unit or subject.  FreshGrade also has an app which makes it more accessible for parents to receive information regarding their child’s learning while at work or on the go.

A downside to FreshGrade is that if the parents are not confident in their technological abilities they might not know how to correctly navigate FreshGrade or use it in the best way to benefit their child. As an app,  some parents have had issues with it crashing and not showing pictures of videos in the best quality so it is not always reliable. Some parents might also have different opinions on the use of pictures and videos of their child online. Even though FreshGrade has a strong privacy policy it is completely understandable if a parent does not feel comfortable with their child’s learning information shown online.

Week 1: FreshGrade

For our group Ed Tech inquiry we have decided to look at FreshGrade. FreshGrade is an online system that allows for teachers, students and parents to stay connected with what is going in the classroom. The site gives you the tools as a teacher to design lessons, schedule assignments and projects, as well as, grade students work and give feedback on assignments. The site also allows parents to stay up to date with what the class is learning and look at how their children are doing in the classroom. School District 61 Greater Victoria has been using FreshGrade for a couple years now, and the response from parents, teachers, and students has been very positive. On the SD61 website you can find all kinds of resources and articles explaining FreshGrade and how effective it can be for the classroom. For this inquiry we will be looking at the Pros and Cons for teachers, students, and parents as well as contacting SD 61 teachers and asking them about their thoughts on the program. We will also be talking to a parent whose children attends a SD 61 school and getting their opinion on the program. We found this topic to be very applicable for us, as some of us may find jobs in the SD61 district and will have to use the site in our own classroom.

Week 10: Minecraft

This week, we had a guest speaker and students come to our class to talk to us about Minecraft and lead us through an activity. I had just heard the news of my Sweden practicum being cancelled, so was not feeling extremely focused. Rich, had excused us from blog posts for that week, but I will reflect on the part that I stayed for.

Hearing Heidi explain that it can be used as a tool for incorporating technology in a classroom while also making it educational in subjects like social studies or math was something I never had considered. It was nice to have her students in the classroom be so eager to help us navigate through the system and answer any questions. You could tell that this program was something that they were very passionate about and for some had created an avenue for pursuing a career in architecture!

I will definitely consider using Minecraft in my future classroom if possible. I think that Heidi having support from her school administrators is a real bonus and I would be interested to know what other schools think about using Minecraft.

Week 9: Screencastify

This week we learned how Screencastify works and were asked to come up with a hypothetical inquiry question that we could use in our future classrooms. I found a website called DK Find Out! and it has resources for teachers, parents and students! To give you an idea of what the website can offer,  please refer to the video made from Screencastify below. I decided to focus my inquiry on something related to animals and nature. By selecting that choice through the home page it brought me to a wire variety of animals and nature to select. Within each of those topics they provide specific information, pictures, quiz-like games, and more!

With our visit in Rebecca’s classroom in mind, this website feels like a great tool for students to use to develop inquiries. Screencastify would be a great tool for students to use to document their learning, potentially record presentations, create awareness on environmental sustainability (less paper being used) and would be a good way to incorporate technology into the class. Screencastify could also provide many positives for teachers. For example, teachers can provide instructional videos for students to use as reference over and over again. This would also work well for any students who perhaps miss class and provides a chance for them to watch and understand what they missed and need to do. I also could see this being useful for a teacher to use and provide to a substitute teacher. This would give the sub a chance to understand instructions with voice as well. Students could also use it for reference in that scenario as well.

Overall, I would love to find a way to incorporate Screencastify in my future classroom, as I think it provides many benefits for students and teachers!

Week 8: Rebecca Bathurst’s Inquiry Kindergarten Classroom

When I heard that we were going to George Jay Elementary School, I was hoping that it was going to involve Rebecca Bathurst’s classroom! My friends’ daughter goes to George Jay and they had been explaining to me what a great kindergarten teacher their daughter had.  I never knew that Rebecca was the teacher until I was in the classroom and saw the class photo with my friends’ daughter in it! I had also came across Rebecca’s instagram account from a teacher friend and was inspired by her account!

I really enjoyed the experience of hearing from Rebecca and getting to see her classroom set up. It was nice to see what was on Instagram in real life and be able to get some inspiration for my future classroom one day! Not only do I think that inquiry-based learning has such a great benefit to kids, I also really enjoyed how most of the classroom activities, art, displays, etc. were mostly from natural materials and made by the students. One of our professors from this program had explained how important it is to involve the children in organizing and creating the classroom space as well as what is on display and I felt that Rebecca did a great job of showcasing how that is done in real life.

Another aspect that I felt she hit in terms of what we are being taught in this program is how important it is to build student relationships. I really like that she focuses on building relationships with not only students, but their families and that she dedicates time to do so. I think that teachers may feel the pressure to teach children what they need to learn from the curriculum by a certain point and maybe that means focusing less on those student-teacher relationships. In an inquiry-based learning environment, I believe it is very crucial to develop this aspect or else you won’t truly know your students or what inspires them! I hope to find time to read Rebecca’s book at some point (hopefully before practicum!).

Music Blog Post #3

My music growth plan timeline has been quite manageable for me to follow, which also alleviates some of the stress of learning a new instrument. With regards to Ode to Joy, I found that the bars are quite similar throughout the song, so that has also been helpful! Even though I have completed my goals of learning Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and Ode to Joy I will continue to play these pieces, as it is nice to have a variety of things to practice, not just one song.

The next song that I will be focusing on learning is Let it Be by The Beatles. This song seems like it will be more challenging than the other two I have already learned.  With that in mind, I gave myself more time (February 27 – March 27) to complete this song, as I was accounting for that. I will follow the same process for learning the other songs, which was learning the right hand first and then the right and then allow myself time to practice playing both hands together. I am overall very happy with my progress with learning the piano and am excited to try and learn my new song!

Note: I found it much harder to play when recording the video. I would play the song almost perfectly and then as soon as I had it recorded I would make mistakes where I normally wouldn’t have! I’m sure others experienced something similar.

Music Blog Post #2

I have began learning Ode to Joy by Beethoven and found it harder than Twinkle Twinkle, but with the help of this Youtube tutorial and my mom (she knows how to play piano) I feel happy with my progress so far! Some things that I find confusing when looking at music is understanding where on the key board your hands are supposed to be placed. Meaning, if the music says to play “E” I struggle to understand what “E” the music is referring to on the piano. Thankfully with online resources and my mom’s help I was able to start to understand more about this. I also find playing both hands together very difficult. I am a bit of perfectionist, so not being able to play the song with it going smoothly and each note connected to the note before (I believe this term is called legato) is difficult. That being said, I know that as I continue to practice I will improve.

I mentioned time management in my last post and I would still say that finding the proper amount of time to practice can be difficult. I have tired to not stress about this learning process too much because I don’t think the purpose of this assignment is to make anyone feel stressed, so instead I have accepted that some days I won’t have time to practice (or go to the gym or do other things that are important to me) and when I do have time I try and maximize my practicing by removing any distractions or setting a timer, etc. I will continue to work on finalizing the Ode to Joy piece and look forward to starting my new piece!

Music Blog Post #1

As part of my music course, I am required to learn an instrument! The instrument that I chose is piano. I use to play piano very briefly when I was younger, but lost interest as I got older. I grew up in a very musical house (all my siblings were required to get their grade 8 piano…not me for some reason), so I do feel that music is a very important part of life! I do wish now as an adult I had kept up with piano or some other sort of musical instrument,  but even as an adult learning piano now I still find it difficult to stay motivated.

The first song that I want to learn is Twinkle Twinkle, as I feel it is pretty simple and a classic! I downloaded a music sheet online and have been trying to practice every 1-2 days, as per my music growth plan. I have been feeling pretty confident in my ability to play it on the piano, although I have been finding it tricky putting both hands together and making it sound half decent. I know that as I keep practicing I will get better at this. I have definitely learned that practice is key when trying to learn a new instrument (like most things in life!) and I feel that out of all the assignments I have in my courses, I look forward to spending my time on this the most!

Overall, I feel pretty on track with my musical growth plan timeline and goals. I have learned how to play Twinkle Twinkle (still needs some practicing with both hands) and I have allowed myself enough time to start learning the bars of Ode to Joy. I have noticed improvement on knowing where keys on the piano are and being able to read the notes on my music sheet. I also have found it helpful that the fingering is listed on my music sheet for quick reference.
